Cocky-evaluation tin be a very daunting task for anyone. To expect closely at ourselves and objectively assess how good—or poorly—a job we are doing is never easy. And sometimes the results force us exterior of our condolement zones, challenging us to be, to do, better. The personal stakes, though varied, are always high: our health, our careers, our families. Those stakes are compounded when it comes to education, a personal and professional endeavour, considering teachers aren't churning out things—our last product is a person, which makes self-evaluation all the more than sacrificial. If nosotros are not succeeding every second of every mean solar day, our students are suffering.

At least that'south the supposition.

Thinking outside the box, and sometimes floundering along the way, is a great didactics tool. After all, that's how life teaches united states, isn't it?

One of the hardest-working educators I know, Ms. Beth Ryce, teaches Advance Placement English language classes, and every January, Beth relinquishes her championship and allows her seniors to become the teachers. It is impossible to conceptualize the varied hurdles and challenges that result from giving students such command and independence. Beth does her best to be a step ahead, troubleshooting, problem solving and guiding. She maintains it is worth it, especially because the students are engaged in reading and practicing the invaluable task of evaluating how they best larn, two lessons they will use for a lifetime.

The post-obit unit program, Epic January, comes from Ms. Beth Ryce. I am sharing it with her permission.
